The Audi A4 is a compact executive automobile produced by the German auto manufacturer Audi AG since late 1994. The primary generation A4 succeeded the 4 prior generations of the Audi 80. And just like its Audi eighty predecessor, the Audi A4 vehicle layout is composed of a longitudinally orientated engine at the front, with transaxle-type transmissions mounted instantly to the back of the engine, again, orientated longitudinally.
Drive output is broadcast to either the front wheels, or on some models, making use of Audi's trademark quattro permanent four-wheel drive system through a Torsen centre differential.
Since its establishment, the Audi A4 has been available in 4 generations, based mostly on the Volkswagen Group 'B ' series of vehicle platforms. Audi's internal numbering convention thus treats the A4 as a logical continuation of the Audi 80 lineage, thus the first A4 was designated as the B5-series, followed by the successive B6 and B7, and the present B8.
Of the key body styles, it is (always has been) available as a bar / sedan variation, and an "Avant", which is Audi's name for an estate / van. The second (B6) and 3rd generations (B7) of the A4 also had a Cabriolet version, but the Cabriolet was not kept for the prevailing 4th generation (B8). Audi now has Cabriolet versions of the related Audi A5 and S5 coups and also, the smaller Audi A3. Additionally, higher performance versions, without delay, related to the A4 include the Audi S4, and the reduced availability quattro GmbH-developed exceedingly high performance Audi RS4.
