Audi Front

At first presented early in 1933, the Audi Front UW 220 was Europe's first automobile to mix front-wheel drive with a 6 cylinder engine. It stayed in production for a touch under 2 years and then was replaced by the Audi Front UW 225 featuring a bigger 2.25 litre engine. The bigger engined car introduced in 1935 continued to be offered till 1939. At launch the Front UW 220 best featured a straight-six cylinder ohv engine of 1,950 cc.

Claimed maximum power output was 40 ps (twenty-nine kW) at 3,500 revs per minute. The 2 litre engine was shared with the vehicle Union group's Wanderer W22 introduced simultaneously. The letters "UW" in the car's name stood for "Umgekehrter Wayfarer” and referred to the proven fact that it featured a Wayfarer engine that had been "umgekehrt" ( turned around ) thru 180 degrees so as to drive wheels which, on this application, were really before the engine. In common with many performance automobiles of the period, the Front UW 220 provided a claimed max speed of a hundred km / h (63 miles per hour): possibly real performance information would have sundry according to the weight and wind-cheating qualities of every individual auto body.

Varied body styles were offered including four door sports limos and two door cabriolets / roadsters. For the UW 225 produced from 1935 and engine size was increased to 2,257 cc and reported maximum power rose to fifty ps ( thirty six kW ) ) or fifty five ps ( forty kW ), respectively at 3,300 or 3,800 r.p.m : increased power was reproduce by a modest increase in the claimed top speed to 105 km / h ( sixty five miles per hour ). The ohv engine came, again, from fellow car Union group member Wayfarer, being shared with the Wayfarer W245 and its inheritor models. Regardless of the relative novelty of the front-wheel drive configuration, the makers quoted the car's turning circle as 12.5 meters which wasn't seriously above normal for automobiles of this size.

The rear wheel drive Wayfarer with that the Audi shared its engine featured a publicized turning circle of twelve meters. The vehicle was assembled at the plant of Horch, which by this time was also an automobile Union group company. Roughly 4,500 Audi Fronts were produced, including 1,817 of the earlier UW 220 model built between Apr 1933 and Nov 1934. By 1938 when the vehicle was replaced by the Audi 920, 2,591 of the inheritor UW 225 model had been produced.
