Origin of Audi

The Audi history starts with a person called Aug Horch, who set up the Company HORCH & Corp in 1899.He invented his first vehicle 1901 with some help from fifteen fellow employees. The automobile had a maximum speed of 32 km / h. In 1909 Mr. Horch had to leave his company due to major issues with the commercial management and set up another company called Audi. “Audi" is the Latin interpretation for "Horch" and he took that name as he wished to build autos under his very own name. So, the brand "Audi Automobilwerke GmbH" was registered in 1910. Till the 1st World War some of the automobiles built under the Audi name won a few rallies, which helped determine the name internationally.

In the first war Audi was compelled to produce cars for the war effort, and then after the war the recession was also an amazing problem for the company. Thus the founder Aug Horch left the management in 1920. The company managed to get thru the difficult times from 1927 to 1930, but in 1931 the management realized that only a union with other automobile manufacturer could keep Audi alive. At that point the car union was set up; the members were DKW, HORCH, Wayfarer and AUDI. The new corporations’ insignia to show the union of the 4 corporations was the now familiar 4 rings, which are still employed by Audi today. The new union was successful in motor sport in the following years. The most powerful automobile that was build before the Second World War was a six litre V sixteen engine with 382 KW (582PS) in 1936.

In the years of the Second World War, the automobile union once more was forced to build autos for German army. Many motorbikes, engines, different war cars and even parts for submarines were built till 1945. At that point all factories in Germany were fully annihilated by American bombers. After the war had stopped there were about sixty 000 DKW army automobiles worldwide that required spare parts and maintenance. This was the explanation a fresh start in Ingolstadt, southern Germany was made. Just after the war there were again many autos produced, the most vital for me was the DKW Munga, a four-wheel jeep with 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine. Invented in 1956 for the German army, there were only two hundred and fifty autos produced for testing purposes. On of these vehicles made a trip around the globe and drove over 240 000 km without major issues. This was the start of the later idea called Quattro. Virtually 57 000 Mungaswere built till 1968.

In the following years many alternative engine- and vehicle types were invented and produced in big amounts. The 2-stroke system got replaced by the four stroke one in 1965, a major point in the engine development. For the power or the engines has been risen ceaselessly, the company thought about a new drive train idea. An performance of over one hundred KW with front wheel drive shows heavy scrape on the front tires and perilous Ferrari an effects. The Iltis jeep what had replaced the Munga had not that issues and the cause of that wasn't the minor performance of 75hp, it was actually the four wheel idea. Mr.Bensinger, the daddy of the Quattro, made many tests and attempted to persuade the management to give him green light for building a 4 wheel drive idea in a street vehicle.

The board weren't awfully happy with that concept because the idea that no-one will purchase such an automobile and particularly if it had been a high technology one not build by Porsche or Mercedes. These 2 firms were the sole ones that had the name to do such large inventions. One has to inform the automobile Union at that point had no reputation in build high-tech vehicles. Happily Mr.Bensinger did a best job and the project QUATTRO was born and the management made a decision to make this drive train idea famous all around the world with high activities in motor sport. To get the automobile prepared in a brief time many parts of available other types were used. The engine came out of the two hundred, the body was from the Audi eighty initially and the drive train came out of the Iltis, the inheritor of the famous Munga. Definitely many parts were braced, changed in size and improved for the hi-performance the auto should have. After 2 years of improving and testing, the first real ur-quattro with the new coupe body was built in 1980. The power rose to 200hp in the testing time, not such a bad number if you suspect that almost all the other auto producer did with a 2.2l engine.
