The Modern Era

The new combined company was known as Audi NSU vehicle Union AG, and saw the rise of Audi as a separate brand for the 1st time since the pre-war age. The 1st new auto of this regime was the Audi a hundred of 1968. This was shortly joined by the Audi 80 / Fox (which formed the base for the 1973 Volkswagen Passat) in 1972 and the Audi 50 (later rebadged as the Volkswagen Polo) in 1974. The Audi fifty was a seminal design in some ways, because it was actually the first incarnation of the Golfing / Polo idea, one that led on to an exceedingly successful world automobile.

The Audi image at this time was a conservative one, and therefore an offer from chassis engineer, Jörg Bensinger was accepted to develop the four-wheel drive technology in Volkswagen's Iltis army automobile for an Audi performance auto and rally racing auto. The performance auto, introduced in 1980, was named the "Audi Quattro", a turbocharged coup which was also the 1st German big production car to feature permanent all-wheel drive through a centre differential. Usually called the "Ur-Quattro" ( the "Ur-" prefix is a German augmentative used, in this example, to mean "original" and is also applied to the 1st generation of Audi's S4 and S6 sport sedans, as in "UrS4" and "UrS6"), few of these cars were produced (all hand-built by a single team), but the model was successful in rallying. Outstanding wins proved the feasibility of all-wheel drive racecars, and the Audi name became associated with new developments in car technology. In 1985, with the car Union and NSU brands effectively dead, the firm's official name was now shortened to simply Audi AG.

In 1986, as the Passat-based Audi eighty was starting to develop a sort of "grandfather's car" image, the type 89 was introduced. This absolutely new development sold very well. However, its modern, dynamic exterior belied the low performance of its base engine, and its base package was quite Spartan (even the passenger-side mirror was a choice.) In 1987, Audi put forward a new and extraordinarily sublime Audi ninety, which had a much superior set of standard features. In the early 1990s, sales started to slump for the Audi eighty series, and some basic construction issues started to surface.

In the early part of the 21st century, Audi set out on a German racetrack to claim and maintain a couple of World Records, for example Top Speed Endurance. This effort was in-line with the organization's heritage from the 1930s racing age Silver Arrows. Sales slid after a sequence of recalls from 1982-1987 of Audi 5000 models connected with reported events of unexpected unplanned acceleration linked to 6 deaths and seven hundred accidents. At the time, NHTSA was examining fifty automobile models from twenty makers for unexpected rises of power. A sixty minutes report aired twenty-three November 1986, featuring interviews with 6 folk who had sued Audi after reporting unplanned acceleration, showing an Audi 5000 ostensibly suffering a difficulty when the brake pedal was pushed. Subsequent investigation exposed that 1 hour had built the failure fitting a canister of compressed air on the passenger-side floor, linked thru a hose to a hole drilled into the transmission. Audi said, before discoveries by outside investigators, the issues were due to driver error, in particular pedal misapplication.

Afterwards, the nation's Road Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concluded that lots of unintentional acceleration cases, including all of the ones that pushed the hour report, were due to driver blunder like perplexity of pedals. CBS didn't recognize the test results of concerned central agencies, but did recognize the similar results of another study. With the series of recall campaigns, Audi made a few alterations; the 1st changed the distance between the brake and accelerator on automatic-transmission models. Later repairs, of two hundred and fifty thousand autos going back to 1978, added a device requiring the driver to press the brake pedal before shifting out of park. An inheritance of the Audi 5000 and other reported cased of unexpected unintentional acceleration are complicated gear stick patterns and brake interlock mechanisms to stop inadvertent shifting into forward or reverse. Audi afterwards offered increased warranty protection and renamed the influenced models with the 5000 turning into the one hundred and two hundred in 1989 and only reached the same sales levels again by model year two thousand.
