The Audi R8 is a sports-prototype race automobile introduced in 2k for sports car racing as a redevelopment of their Audi R8R and Audi R8C employed in 1999. It is among the most successful sports cars ever ( alongside such greats as the Porsche 956 / 962 ) having won the respected twenty-four Hours of Le Mans in 2k, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005 ( 5 of the 7 years it competed ). Its streak of Le Mans victories between two thousand and 2005 was damaged only by the Bentley Speed eight (powered by the same V8 twin-turbo engine) in 2003, when the R8 finished third. The petrol-powered Audi R8 race vehicle got replaced by the new Audi R10 TDI Diesel in 2006; nonetheless the necessity to further develop the R10 meant the R8 saw action in one or two races leading in to Le Mans.
Production
To provide the R8 at quattro GmbH, 70 employees fit five thousand unique parts by hand. The factory at Neckarsulm, redeveloped at a price of 28 million, customarily produces between 8 and 15 automobiles a day, up to a maximum daily output of twenty-nine automobiles. Ninety-five lasers inspect the whole automobile in 5 seconds to be sure that over 220 measurements are inside 0.1 millimetres of the programmed plans.
Other technical details
As Volkswagen Group owns all Audi and Lamborghini (Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.), some of the R8 is shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo, including some of the frame and floorpan, door handle mechanisms, transmissions, and the revised V10 engine. The R8 is created distinct by its Germanic exterior styling, cabin, smaller V8 engine, magnetic dampers, and pricing. The R8 (with the V8 engine) has a kerb weight of 1,560 kgm (3,439 lb). Its suspension uses Delphi magneto rheological dampers. Security features include Bosch ESP 8.0 Electronic Stability Program which includes Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) and Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), front dual-stage airbags, and 'sideguard ' curtain airbags. The R8 also includes a specific curved bar of LED daytime running lamps (DRLs) mounted inside the xenon HID headlamp surroundings.
Future development
The Audi R8 V12 TDI ( later renamed the Audi R8 TDI Le Mans ), was displayed as a diesel engined concept automobile, was presented at the 2008 northern US Global automobile Show on thirteen Jan , and the Geneva Motor Show in March. It was to utilize a 6.0 litre V12 engine, making use of Volkswagen Group's long-established Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) turbodiesel technology. This engine was rated 368 KW (500 PS; 493 bhp), and one thousand Newton metres (738 ftlbs) of torque. It uses Audi's quattro permanent four-wheel drive system, is longitudinally mid-engined. It's got a six-speed manual transmission. It accelerates from zero to one hundred kilometres an hour (nil to 62 miles per hour) in 4.2 seconds, and its top speed is 325 km / h (202 miles per hour).
The R8 TDI Le Mans has changed suspension settings and brakes, to deal with the extra power and weight ( three hundred kg ( 661.4 lb ) ), caused by replacing the standard V8 engine with the V12 TDI. The V12 TDI needs more cooling than the standard R8, therefore the NACA channel in the roof to feed extra air in to the engine. The vents on the back and front of the auto have also been increased by twenty p.c. in size. The headlights are all-LED. For its appearance at the Detroit Motor Show, Audi fitted 20 in. amalgamate wheels. The rear bulkhead has been moved forward to accommodate the physically bigger V12 engine, meaning it loses the space behind the back seats sometimes found on the standard R8.
Reviews
Many publications were hailing it as the 1st vehicle to actually be in a position to beat the Porsche 997 considered by many to be one of the greatest sports autos ever made, and a pacesetter in its class. 1st comparison tests have proved quite positive in this respect; Evo Magazine listed it as a "supercar", compared the R8 to the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and BMW M6 and after praising the R8's "wonderful stability, traction and grip, unique steering precision and bite, (and) its uncannily flat and disturbance-free ride", claimed that due to "the sublime effortlessness of it all", the Audi is a better sports vehicle. The draft concluded that "Audi humbles Porsche. A new dawn starts today". Any publications have also written similar reviews of the Audi thrashing the Porsche in comparison tests. In a half mile drag race conducted by Top Gear between the R8, a 997 Carrera S, the Porsche won, crossing the line merely a half metre before the R8. However, the R8 simply beat the Porsche around Top Gear's test track.
